Katherine de Vos Devine
PRINCIPAL ATTORNEY
A lawyer who speaks artist.
Katherine is an attorney, art historian, and the founder of Implement Legal. She has helped hundreds of artists, writers, and other creatives build businesses, protect their creations, and plan their legacies.
Previously, she founded de Vos Devine Law, a boutique art law firm based in Asheville, NC, and Cauldron Arts Incubator, an art consultancy dedicated to emerging Southeastern art. She is the former executive director of Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center and previously worked at Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft LLP, where she assisted private foundations and public charities.
Katherine teaches Art Law at Queens University of Charlotte and is Co-Chair of the College Art Association Committee on Intellectual Property. Her academic research focuses on fair use and appropriation art, and she has spoken widely about copyright law and artists’ rights at venues including the University of California at Berkeley, Harvard University, and Art Basel.
Katherine is an extrovert who likes espresso, cashmere, and lifting heavy weights. When she’s not working with clients, Katherine writes Protect Your Magic, a newsletter on intellectual property, contemporary art, and creative economies.

Robert Devine
MANAGING ATTORNEY
A counselor who makes order out of chaos.
Robert is an attorney, veteran, and managing partner at Implement Legal. He uses his experience working with large multinational corporations such as Google, Sony, and T-Mobile to advise artists and creatives on contracts, business formation, and strategic planning.
Service has defined his life. Service in the military as a Naval Academy graduate and naval officer. Service to clients at Cleary Gottlieb, where he specialized in complex corporate and financial transactions. Service to our community through volunteer work and pro bono projects. And service to fellow veterans in his work for the Department of Veterans Affairs, where he oversaw more than $700M in annual revenue collections for 21 hospitals located throughout the Southeast.
Robert is the firm’s operations wizard, finance guru, and team leader who keeps projects on track. He is also the emotionally intelligent heart of the firm, with protective instincts, a sharp eye for detail, and a remarkable sense of tact.
Robert is an introvert who likes pour-over coffee, noise-canceling headphones, and Dante’s Comedy (Mandelbaum translation, Dore illustrations). He occasionally pops up on social media but prefers IRL opportunities to connect and create community. Outside the office, he writes novels, builds LEGO modulars, and coaches youth basketball.
